The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to conduct a major leadership haul ahead of its series against Ireland and England.
According to multiple reports and media outlets' claims, Shreyas Iyer is all set to become India’s T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. The board officials have reportedly finalized Iyer as the next leader of the team due to the prolonged dip in Suryakumar Yadav’s form.
Shreyas Iyer captain, Tilak Varma vice-captain
If the reports are to be believed, Tilak Varma is also all set to take on a leadership role in this format for the Men in Blue. Varma can become the vice-captain of Shreyas in the shortest format of the game. An official announcement is expected to come soon, ahead of India’s tour against Ireland and England.
Multiple previous reports were circulating on social media platforms, hinting at a potential change in captaincy for the T20 International format. The board has issued an extended list of players for the Asian Games, where Suryakumar Yadav’s name was not mentioned, which sparked speculations related to his future with the national side.
No Suryakumar Yadav in the Asian Games players' list
The preliminary 30-member probable list for the 2026 Asian Games contains stars like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and many other star faces of the Indian cricket team, but not Suryakumar Yadav. Additionally, it is widely speculated that the board has been looking beyond Yadav, under whose leadership the Men in Blue claimed the 2026 ICC T20I World Cup trophy, defeating New Zealand in the final.
According to the previous rumors, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson, who have experience in leading teams in domestic cricket and in the Indian Premier League, were in the race to become the next face of the T20I team. At present, the reports are shaped in a more confident way, claiming Shreyas Iyer is all set to replace Yadav, and Tilak Varma to become the deputy.
India to face Ireland and England in back-to-back T20Is
After the home series against Afghanistan, where India will have to play a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series, the Men in Blue are scheduled to face Ireland for a 2-match T20I series in the last week of June, followed by a white-ball series against England, starting from July 1.
The series against England contains five T20Is and five ODIs. Ahead of this two-way series, the board officials are expected to announce their decision on appointing the next captain of India for the Twenty20 International format.
After MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer is considered the most celebrated captain among Indian cricket fans because of his stints with three different teams in the Indian Premier League as the captain.
As the form could be a parameter for selection, Tilak Varma’s name makes sense in the discussion, as the middle-order batter has been in constant form for India and for the franchise as well.
