Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to join Delhi Capitals as their new fast-bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. According to Sportstar, the 51-year-old has already joined the team at its preparatory camp and trials in New Delhi, but the franchise is yet to make the official appointment.
Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the Indian Premier League 2026 with seven wins and seven losses under captain Axar Patel and head coach Hemang Badani. Notably, the JSW Group, one of the franchise’s co-owners, will take full administrative control and make significant changes to the team’s backroom setup.
Chaminda Vaas Joins Delhi Capitals in New Delhi
According to Sportstar, Chaminda Vaas has joined the Delhi Capitals camp in New Delhi. The former Sri Lanka pacer is involved in the team’s preparatory camp and pace trials as the franchise begins assessing its bowling options ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
Vaas is set to replace Munaf Patel as Delhi’s fast-bowling coach, although the franchise is yet to officially confirm the appointment. His experience in working with fast bowlers is expected to help Delhi build a more consistent pace attack after a disappointing bowling campaign in IPL 2026.
Chaminda Vaas Brings Vast International and Coaching Experience
Chaminda Vaas was one of Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowlers during a career that lasted more than a decade. He played 111 Tests and 322 ODIs for Sri Lanka, taking 355 and 400 wickets, respectively. He was also part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 ODI World Cup.
The left-arm pacer was known for his accuracy, swing and ability to extract movement even from batting-friendly pitches. After retiring from international cricket, Vaas moved into coaching and has worked with the Sri Lankan national team as well as several franchise teams.
His experience in developing fast bowlers will be a key addition to Delhi’s coaching staff. Amit Mishra has also joined the camp as the franchise’s new spin-bowling coach. Mishra is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history and will work with Delhi’s spin department ahead of the new season.
Delhi Capitals Complete Major Coaching Overhaul After IPL 2026 Struggles
Delhi Capitals have made major changes to their coaching setup after missing the playoffs in IPL 2026. They also struggled at home, losing five of their seven matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, including a 75-run collapse against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Delhi finished the season with three consecutive wins against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after being eliminated from playoff contention.
KL Rahul scored 593 runs at a strike rate of 174.41, including one century and five fifties. Lungi Ngidi led the bowling attack with 13 wickets, but Delhi managed only 64 wickets throughout the season, the joint-lowest tally in the league.
The franchise has replaced Hemang Badani with former India captain Sourav Ganguly as head coach, while Yuvraj Singh has joined as assistant coach. Amit Mishra and Chaminda Vaas will oversee the spin and pace departments, respectively.
