The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering retaining Sahibzada Farhan as Pakistan’s T20I captain for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka. If approved, the 30-year-old opener would replace Salman Ali Agha as the team’s full-time captain in the shortest format.
Following the 2026 Asian Games, Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in three T20Is in Rawalpindi on October 9, 11, and 13. The PCB is also looking to give opportunities to several young players during the series as part of its plans to build a wider squad ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Sahibzada Farhan Emerges as Captaincy Contender for Sri Lanka Series
Sahibzada Farhan recently took charge of Pakistan’s 15-member squad at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. His appointment has led to reports that the PCB could continue with him as captain for the Sri Lanka series.
However, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has played down the speculation. He said the Asian Games captaincy is primarily a development opportunity for Farhan to gain experience in tactical decision-making, communication, and handling pressure at the international level.
Hesson also stated that the Asian Games role should not be viewed as a formal audition for the permanent T20I captaincy. The final decision will rest with the PCB chairman and selection committee, and the board has not officially confirmed a leadership change.
Sahibzada Farhan has previous leadership experience in domestic cricket. He has captained Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) in the President’s Trophy and has also led the Peshawar regional setup.
Salman Ali Agha Under Pressure After T20 World Cup Campaign
Salman Ali Agha’s position came under scrutiny after Pakistan failed to progress beyond the Super 8 stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The captain also acknowledged that tactical and leadership errors contributed to the team’s struggles during the tournament.
His batting has been another concern. Salman’s T20I strike rate is around 123, which has attracted criticism in a format that increasingly demands a higher scoring rate from top-order batters.
His decision to promote himself to No. 3 during the World Cup also affected Pakistan’s batting combination by pushing natural openers further down the order.
In contrast, Sahibzada Farhan was Pakistan’s leading run-scorer at the 2026 T20 World Cup. He scored 383 runs and registered two centuries, strengthening his case as an aggressive top-order option for the next World Cup cycle.
Pakistan Set to Give Young Players Opportunities Against Sri Lanka
The PCB is also expected to rest several senior players during the three-match series. Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf are not expected to be included in the squad for the Rawalpindi matches.
Sahibzada Farhan will lead the young Asian Games squad alongside vice-captain Abdul Samad and wicketkeeper Usman Khan. The 15-member group also includes Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Arafat Minhas, Haider Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Saim Ayub, and Sufyan Moqim.
The men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games begins on September 24, with the medal matches scheduled for October 3. The tournament will give Farhan further international leadership experience before the PCB decides on the captaincy for the Sri Lanka series.
