Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is unlikely to receive an extension as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) when his current term ends on April 2, 2027. According to a Cricbuzz report, at least three of the five Full Members are expected to oppose an extension.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Tamim Iqbal is next in line to take over the ACC presidency under the body’s rotational system. Tamim is keen on taking charge and has conveyed his intentions to the body. The ACC presidency normally changes hands every two years among its Full Members.
ACC Members Oppose Mohsin Naqvi Extension
The ACC presidency rotates every two years among its five Full Members: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. An extension is possible, but it requires agreement from the ACC Executive Board.
According to Cricbuzz, at least three and potentially four of the five Full Members are expected to oppose extending Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure, making it difficult for him to remain in the position beyond April 2027.
There has also been speculation that Mohsin Naqvi could seek to remain in office until the next ACC Annual General Meeting. However, an ACC member told Cricbuzz that the president’s term is not linked to the timing of the AGM.
“There may be speculations, but Naqvi’s term ends in April 2027. Bangladesh is next in line, and there is a belief among ACC members that Tamim is looking forward to taking over,” the official told Cricbuzz.
“The president has a two-year term which is rotated among the full members of the ACC. Extensions can occasionally be granted by unanimous agreement among the Executive Board and in the current ACC Executive Board, there is no unanimity. At least on the subject of extension to Naqvi, there is little chance of unanimity, going by recent turn of events,” the official added.
Tamim Iqbal Next in Line for ACC Presidency
Bangladesh is next in the ACC’s rotational order, with Tamim Iqbal interested in taking over from Mohsin Naqvi. The former Bangladesh captain was recently elected BCB president and began a four-year term after winning the election unopposed.
Jay Shah remained ACC president for a third year in 2024 after receiving unanimous support from the member boards. Sri Lanka Cricket, which was next in the rotation at the time, agreed to allow Shah to continue in the role.
The current situation is different, with Bangladesh in line to assume the presidency when Naqvi’s term ends. Tamim has also spoken about improving Bangladesh’s relationship with India since becoming BCB president. He recently said the BCB and BCCI remain in regular contact.
Asian U19 Women’s Championship Could Be Final Trophy Presentation
Before Mohsin Naqvi’s term ends, the Asian Under-19 Women’s Championship in Bangladesh in December could provide another significant ACC event involving India. India are the two-time defending champions and could face another trophy presentation involving the ACC president if they reach the final.
Naqvi has been involved in recent trophy-presentation disputes involving Indian teams. After India won the men’s Asia Cup in 2025, the team did not collect the trophy from Naqvi. A similar situation occurred after India Women won the Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai in September 2026.
The Indian women’s team again did not receive the trophy from Naqvi after beating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final. Notably, the presentation arrangements became a point of disagreement, with India willing to accept the trophy from ACC vice-president Khalid Al Zarooni instead.
