6 consecutive sixes! Dewald Brevis, Sherfane Rutherford go berserk in MI Cape Town vs Pretoria Capitals clash
New Year’s Eve in the SA20 League delivered a thrilling moment as Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brevis put on a stunning show with the bat. The duo, playing for Pretoria Capitals, smashed six sixes off six consecutive balls across two overs in the eighth match of the 2025-26 season against MI Cape Town.
Rutherford delivered a match-winning all-round performance to help Pretoria Capitals secure a victory over MI Cape Town at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday, December 31. He scored an unbeaten 47 and followed it up with a spell of 4 for 24. The Capitals recorded their first win of the tournament.
Pretoria Capitals Stumble Early After Being Asked to Bat First
Pretoria Capitals got off to a disappointing start after being asked to bat first. They lost three wickets for 38, with the top order back in the pavilion inside the powerplay.
Shai Hope and Wihan Lubbe then came together and focused on steadying the innings. They rotated the strike well and slowly rebuilt, helping the team recover and move past 100.
Hope scored 45 from 30 balls before getting out in the 15th over. Lubbe went on to complete a half-century off 31 balls, showing patience and clean hitting. He was dismissed early in the 16th over after scoring 60 from 36 balls, leaving Pretoria at 134 for 5.
At that stage, the team seemed unlikely to cross 180. However, the solid base laid by Hope and Lubbe allowed the batters to attack at the death, shifting the momentum and setting up a much stronger finish than expected.
Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brevis Unleash Six-Sixes Burst to Wreak Havoc
Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brevis attacked MI Cape Town bowlers in the final overs. In the 18th over, Brevis smashed two back-to-back sixes off Corbin Bosch on the fifth and sixth balls.
Rutherford continued the assault in the 19th over. He smashed Dwaine Pretorius for four consecutive sixes off the first four balls. This completed a rare feat of six sixes in six balls across two overs.

Rutherford finished unbeaten on 47 from just 15 balls, hitting six sixes at a strike rate of 313.33. Brevis remained unbeaten on 36 from 13 balls at a strike rate of 276.92, with four sixes and one four. Rutherford and Brevis added 86 runs from 30 balls, with 72 of those runs coming in the last three overs alone.
Sherfane Rutherford Named Player of the Match for All-Round Brilliance
MI Cape Town began their chase with confidence and scored 63 for 1 in the first six overs. The Capitals dropped three catches inside the first 10 overs, and the hosts looked well placed despite chasing a big target.
However, the momentum did not last as wickets kept falling through the middle overs. Nicholas Pooran scored 25 at a strike rate of over 400, but he faced only six balls. Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks added 46 runs together but could not accelerate.
The lower order failed to contribute, with only one batter outside the top four reaching double figures. Corbin Bosch finished unbeaten on 10 from eight balls. Ryan Rickelton, who was dropped twice, top-scored with 33 from 17 deliveries.
Sherfane Rutherford also delivered with the ball to seal the game. He claimed 4 for 24 in three overs, his best bowling figures, while Keshav Maharaj bagged three wickets, finishing with 3 for 28. Rutherford’s impact with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Match award.
